What to expect

​

Before surgery

  1. History & Physical must be signed by PCP no more than 30 days before procedure

  2. Patient Health History must be filled out prior to procedure

  3. Capital Children's will call to confirm health status before procedure

  4. Patient needs a responsible adult to give them a ride home and monitor after anesthesia

  5. Parent or guardian must be on premises during entire procedure

Day before surgery

  • Capital Children's will call to confirm appointment

  • Patient must fast (cannot eat, drink or chew after midnight before the surgery)

Day of surgery - Check In 

  • Patient must fast (cannot eat, drink or chew after midnight before the surgery)

  • Bring insurance card, History & Physical, and Patient Health History

  • Parent or guardian must be present to check in patient

  • Patient should wear comfortable clothing

Day of surgery - After Surgery

  • Patient will be transported to and monitored in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

  • In the event of unforeseen complications, patients may be transferred to Children's National Hospital

  • Responsible adult must be present to take patient home

​

At home

  • Monitor patient for at least 24 hours

  • Call Capital Children's with any unusual symptoms experienced by patient

  • Do not administer medication to patient without practitioner approval

  • Capital Children's will call to check patient status on the next working day following the procedure

Our surgery center is dedicated to providing dental treatment for children and special needs patients of all ages under General Anesthesia in a hospital-grade operating room.  Our state of the art surgery center was built in 2017.

 

We have partnered with Capital Care Anesthesia to provide the highest quality pediatric anesthesia experience.  Our medical and nursing staff are ACLS and PALS certified.

After treatment patients and their families will receive follow up care instructions from their primary care dentist.

 

We currently accept most private dental insurances as well as DC and Maryland Medicaid.  We also welcome self-pay patients.

Our Pediatric Dentists

Dr. Korosh Eric Armakan, D.D.S., is known to his patients as "Dr. Eric", grew up in northern Virginia and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Howard University College of Dentistry and completed a post-doctoral General Practice Residency Program from Howard University Hospital.  He then pursued and completed a specialty residency program in Pediatric Dentistry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. Dr Eric was recently voted into Northern Virginia Magazine's June 2016 "Best of NOVA" issue and has volunteered his services abroad, is an active member of the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry.

 

Dr. Karen Benitez, D.D.S., received her doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in 2006. Following graduation, she pursued further hospital-centered training in General Practice Residency at Jacobi Medical Center and Pediatric Dental training at St. Barnabas Hospital. Her training was extensive in preventive and restorative care, growth and development, behavior guidance, including oral sedation, trauma, as well as interceptive orthodontic management. Dr. Benitez received her Board Certification in 2009 and completed her oral exam to attain Diplomate recognition in 2010 from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She practiced as a Pediatric Dentist for a year in Stamford, CT and Queens, NY before moving to the Washington, DC area in 2010.

 

Dr. Antionette Wilson-Banks, D.D.S., taught middle school; and after two years she entered Howard University College of Dentistry, where she earned her Doctorate in Dental Surgery. At Howard University, Dr. Wilson-Banks also completed her postgraduate specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Wilson-Banks is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition, she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Order of the Eastern Star and Delta Phi Sigma (Dental) Sorority, Inc.

Our General Dentist

Michael S. Saoud, D.M.D., After graduating from the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Dr. Saoud completed a surgical residency at the Baltimore Veterans’ Affairs Hospital where he received advanced training in all aspects of general dentistry with an emphasis on surgical and hospital based care of medically compromised patients.  Training included sedation and care of ASA class I-IV patients, including endodontics and oral surgery.  Dr. Saoud continued his training at the L.D. Pankey Institute and is a member of the alumni association.  He has been practicing comprehensive general dentistry, including sedation, for over 20 years and is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Prosthodontic Society and American Equilibration Society.  He lives in Maryland with his wife and their 3 children.

Our Anesthesiologists

Dr. RaihanAhmed Chowdhury M.D., is an anesthesiologist. Dr. Chowdhury completed his fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Hospital and his residency at Upstate Medical University and Harlem Hosptial Center-Columbia University. Dr. Chowdhury received his medical degree from Mymensingh Medical College.

 

Dr. Alicia Young M.D., is an anesthesiologist. Dr. Young received her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine where she also completed her residency.

 

Dr. Robert Zaremski M.D., has been practicing as an anesthesiologist for more than 20 years. Dr. Zaremski did his residency at the NYU School of Medicine and received his medical degree from University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.

Three types of fees

There are three fees associated with

work done at Capital Children's:

  1. Anesthesia 

  2. Facility        

  3. Dental fees

Pre-approval

Insurance coverage will be verified prior to your procedure.  Any fees not covered by your insurance company must be covered by the patient

​

Uninsured Patients 

If you do not have health insurance, please contact Capital Children's directly to discuss your situation.  

​

Pre-payment of fees

Capital Children's requires payment in full prior to scheduling an appointment.  You insurance company will reimburse you directly for the benefits to which you are entitled.

​

Medicaid patients are not responsible for any payment prior to their procedure.

Please return the H&P as soon as possible to Capital Childrens via fax at 301-494-3333

Are there any dietary restrictions before my procedure?

You must fast (do not eat, drink or chew on anything) after midnight of the night before your procedure

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable, loose fit clothing.

What is included in the facility fee?

The Capital Children's facility fee covers the cost of the operating rooms, emergency equipment, nursing staff, supplies and medications (this does not include charges from dental or anesthesiology providers)
